Located in the heart of downtown Chicago in a vibrant university district, HI Chicago hostel is America’s second largest hostel, offering comfortable and contemporary accommodation in an historic building. It has excellent transport links, is very close to Lake Michigan and within walking distance of Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, the Art Institute, Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium.
Guests can enjoy free Wi-Fi throughout the building, free daily continental breakfast, a big self-service kitchen, two cafes, weekly welcome receptions with ice cream or cookies and free daily activities to explore the city with fellow travellers including pub crawls, walking tours, outings to blues and jazz clubs and festivals.
HI Chicago hostel also offers discounts to many of Chicago's best attractions, including Chicago Architecture Foundation, Bobby's Bike Hike, Sears Tower and Hancock Observatory.
What travellers think
It is so big it is difficult to create a social atmosphere for lone travelers. Especially found a wide age range of travelers (not a bad thing), but as a 24 year old female I was placed in a dorm with 4 50+ year old men. Very friendly people, but not easy to connect and explore Chicago with. Maybe think more about dorm placement and social opportunities for lone travelers.
