Stay at a hostel in the peaceful setting of Yilan, Taiwan, and you’ll have plenty of excuses to get outdoors and explore. Visit the Qilan Sacred Trees Garden to see indigenous trees, some of which are over a millennium old. Then there’s Guishan Island – the only active volcano in Taiwan; either hike up the mountain or take a boat tour around the island and see the underwater hot springs just off the coast. Dong Mountain River doubles as a recreation area and its banks are decorated using pebbles, pottery tiles and mosaic with the images of two dragons which, legend claims, protect the river. This is also the location of the popular annual Dragon Boat Races, a 2,500 year-old traditional sport, where boat racers compete for a cash prize. On the river banks, you’ll find Qinshui Park which puts on outdoor stage shows and is a popular tourist location.
