Salvador is home to the biggest street festival in the world and rivals its neighbour Rio’s infamous carnival. With a rich, captivating history and a vibrant African population who have infused their own brilliant culture into the city, Salvador can really pack a punch! As Brazil’s oldest city, the architecture here is extraordinary. Walk the narrow cobbled lanes and take in the sights of multi-coloured, beautifully shaped houses, some shanty, some splendiferous, all fascinating. Alongside Catholicism, the ancient African religion of Candomblé is practiced here. To really appreciate it, it’s worth taking a guided tour to a Candomblé religious ceremony. Aside from the historical relics found in the city centre, Pelourinho, Salvador also boasts an idyllic coastline and a lively nightlife scene – the perfect location for a hostel stay.
