Rotterdam, the Netherlands, was almost completely annihilated during World War II but has rebuilt itself into a city of striking modernity. Its extraordinary new architecture is one of its most distinguishing features. Even the hostel is situated in an example of this: the Cube Houses, which are an attraction in themselves. During the summer, you can catch the Summer Carnival where the streets come alive with music, dance, and Latin American sights and smells. The Street Parade closing event is the highlight as it features thousands of dancers from countries all over the world. The giant Erasmus Bridge, nicknamed ‘The Swan’, is a wonderfully imposing sight which you’re likely to see whether you plan on visiting it or not. Another structure you won’t miss is the Euromast – at 185 metres tall, it offers spectacular views over the city and, if you’re feeling brave, you can even abseil down it!
