In 1890, Francisco Piria purchased the beachside area of Piriapolis as private land but decided that Uruguay should have a beach resort and so the Piriapolis that we know today was born. Laid back and trendy with restaurants, nightclubs, casinos and a sun-baked waterfront promenade, it’s easy to kick back and relax here. Sunbathe, surf or swim at the 25 kilometres of idyllic beaches. Enjoy an ice-cream during the day and a cocktail when dusk falls. Listen to live music and dance until dawn in one of the town’s pulsating bars or nightclubs. For spectacular views across the landscape, climb the spiral staircase inside the concrete cross atop Cerro Pan de Azúcar, a large hill and the third highest point in Uruguay. Visit the Castle of Piria, fronted by palm trees and straight out of a story-book, this intricately designed castle was completed 1897 as Francisco Piria’s personal residence.
