The breath-taking wilderness of Patagonia, Argentina, is a land where the highway stretches on seemingly forever past snow-capped mountains and deserted badlands. The lonely RN40 highway runs parallel to the Andes Mountains and is one of the longest routes in the world, crossing 20 national parks along the way. Travel the entire route if you dare, planning a stop at each hostel. Palaeontologists say that some of the biggest dinosaurs ever to walk the earth can be found in Patagonia. You’ll be amazed at the dinosaur fossils and exhibits on show at the Paleontological Museum. It is located on the waterfront of Lake Nahuel Huapi and includes the 150 million-year-old Ichthyosaurus. For animal lovers, there’s plenty of wildlife to be seen in Patagonia. Visit penguins, dive with sea lions, and abseil down to elephant seals. Head to Calafate to see the incredible Perito Moreno Glacier - pack a picnic and eat overlooking the frozen spectacle.
