One of Scotland’s oldest towns, Inverness’ fascinating history can be found within the ruins of its ancient buildings and the pulse still felt in its medieval architecture. Dating back to AD585, it’s a land of ancient castles, thriving culture, antique churches, and, never forgetting, the Loch Ness Monster. Make time to see the many castles, including Inverness Castle, which is now used as a court house; Cawdor Castle, where some parts of the castle date back to 1380; and Urquhart Castle, which overlooks Loch Ness. Try and spot the famous monster in Loch Ness’s cloudy waters, where the deepest point is 755ft. Take a guided tour around the city where you’ll see the most significant landmarks and hear about Inverness’s history and legends. Eat Thai food and listen to live music at Hootananny, one of Inverness’s best pubs, before returning to your hostel, feet aching and mind content.
