Idrija is just a half hour drive away from the main motorway from Ljubljana towards Koper. It is the oldest mining town in Slovenia and is known for having the second largest mercury mine in the world. For centuries Idrija was considered the region's centre for scientific and technical research. The mercury mine is now closed and partly converted into a museum where tourists can experience the mining history that is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The town of Idrija is also known for its world famous Idrija lace, which has a unique beauty and quality. In the nearby restored 16th century castle Gewerkenegg you can see exhibitions about the mercury mine and the making of Idrija laces or take a stroll through the town centre and enjoy a delicious portion of Idrija dumplings in one of its many restaurants.
