The small and pristine village of Grundarfjörður, Iceland, is a destination of rare beauty. Watched over by the mountain Kirkjufell and surrounded by water from the Snaefellsnes peninsula, this is a peaceful hostel setting with Snaefellsjokull National Park, home to the 700,000 year-old, glacier-topped Snaefellsjokull volcano, close-by. Within the park, you can see craters, cliffs and Djúpalónssandur beach – a black-sand beach which contains the remains of a shipwreck, as well as frozen lava formations. Take a boat trip from Grundarfjörður to see the varied marine and bird life including humpback whales, orcas and puffins. For incredible views over the wide-ranging landscape, climb Kirkjufell via the hiking path at the base of the mountain.
