As the gateway to the famed Machu Picchu, Cusco, Peru, is a popular hostel destination which offers so much more in its own right. Grand Spanish colonial architecture was built upon the foundations of magnificently engineered Incan ruins, lending the city a fascinating blend of the ancient, the historic, and the modern. Give yourself time to acclimatise to the staggering altitude of 11,000ft and don’t be surprised if you see any number of altitude-sickness remedies being sold to dizzy tourists. Begin in the opulent Plaza de Armas and explore this mesmerising city on foot. Wander by impressive baroque and Renaissance churches and mansions. When you’ve seen enough of the city, head to one of the most famous, and best, hiking trails in the world: The Inca Trail. Subtropical jungle, mountain scenery and Incan ruins are incredible enough, but the final destination, Machu Picchu, will take your breath away.
