One of the oldest cities in Uruguay and capital of the Colonia Department, Colonia is located in south-western Uruguay, overlooking the Río de la Plata. Renowned for its historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is filled with shops, restaurants and bars, a lively waterfront and lovely beaches. Stay in our Colonia hostels and take an evening stroll around the harbour area. Go back in time at the Calle de los Suspiros - also known as the street of the sighs - with its cobblestone streets, colourful houses and quiet vibe. Or visit the whitewashed Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse and get some great views of the city. If you want to explore but don’t want to walk, a fun option is to hire a golf cart or moped and cruise around the city – just take your time exploring this quiet and peaceful city.
