What are the member benefits? Why should I become a member?

Being a member of Hostelling International or your National Youth Hostel Association has many benefits and savings. HI Members save at least 10% on accommodation costs in HI Hostels worldwide compared to non-members. As a member, you also have access to the only global network of Youth Hostels which meet the assured standards, giving you peace of mind. HI Hostels operate in more than 90 countries and are continually growing to meet the needs of our customers. As a member you become part of a global community of travellers just like you and meet people of all nations and cultures, share experiences and friendships.

How can I join Hostelling International?

An eMembership is the electronic form of membership to the HI network. Buy now or at the time of booking with your hostel stay. You will not receive a plastic card but you will be a full member for 12 months from the date you activate your eMembership with access to our Member benefits worldwide. Alternatively, you can purchase a membership card from your National Youth Hostel Association or membership selling outlet before you start your journey.  Your National Youth Hostel Association membership card is also valid in all HI hostels throughout the world and acts as an international card.

If you are already travelling outside of your country of residence or you do not have a National Youth Hostel  Association in your country of residence, you can buy eMembership now or purchase an international membership card when you arrive at most of our  hostels. Prices can vary between hostels, so please contact them directly for assistance using the contact details available on the hostel’s page.

Do I have to be a member to book online/stay at a HI hostel?

You do not need to be a member or add your membership details online in order to make your booking. The prices generally include member discount (unless otherwise stated).

In many countries membership is compulsory to stay at our hostels. Where membership is not compulsory, non-members are required to pay a small surcharge or can purchase a membership card at the hostel. Find full details on membership here.

What are the membership prices and types?

Membership prices and types (Adult, Child, Family or Life Membership) can vary around the world. Please contact your National Youth Hostel Association for full details. Please contact the hostel directly if you are planning to purchase a membership card on arrival. Only eMembership can be purchased on hihostels.com and prices vary depending on your country of residence as you will become a member of your National Association. I have lost my membership card, can I get a replacement?

If you have purchased membership from your National Youth Hostel Association please contact them to arrange a replacement. Contact details can be found using the following link: If you purchased a Hostelling International card over the counter at a hostel, unfortunately these cannot be replaced.

If you purchased an eMembership, you can print it again in your Profile area under the eMembership section.

How can I renew my membership card?

Your eMembership is valid for 12 months from activation and cannot be renewed online. When your eMembership has expired you will need to purchase a new one via hihostels.com.

What is a National Association/YHA?

Hostelling International is made up of National Youth Hostel Associations from around the world. National Youth Hostel Associations are umbrella organisations for the hostels within that country. Many National Youth Hostel Associations are referred to as YHAs and others have alternative names for their association.

How can I add my membership details to my booking?

When booking online you do not need to enter any of your membership details. The prices found online at www.hihostels.com are generally including Hostelling International discount (unless otherwise stated). For some countries membership is compulsory if you wish to stay in HI Hostels. In other countries, members now enjoy at least a 10% saving on accommodation compared to non-members. Membership is not required during the booking process but is necessary at check-in.

Does everyone travelling together have to hold a membership?

Unless you have purchased a family card, our memberships are personal and therefore each member of the party will need to hold their own membership to benefit from the 10% accommodation discount. Only a personal eMembership is available to purchase on hihostels.com.  Please contact your country of residence National Association to see if they provide a family members - for contact details refer - Our network of hostels

What is the difference between my membership and an eMembership?

Both types of membership will offer you a 10% accommodation discount.  Memberships issued by a National Association may include additional deals and you should refer to the country website for details.    With an eMembership you do not receive a card as it is an electronic membership, your email is your confirmation.

How to I activate my eMembership?

When you have purchased eMembership you can either activate from the confirmation page or go into your account.  You will have 3 options:-

  • The eMembership is for me and I want to activate it
  • The eMembership is for someone else and I can activate it
  • The eMembership is for someone else.  Please send an activation email/I want to send them an activation email.

The eMembership is for me and I want to activate it

If you have made a booking at the same time as buying eMembership the eMembership can start ‘Today’ or on the date of your booking.  If you did not book a hostel and purchased eMembership on its own then the start date is ‘Today’ 

The First name and Last name and email address will be automatically populated.  Please add your Date of Birth, Address and Country of residence (if your Country is not listed in the ‘Country of Residence’ dropdown please select ‘other’) and select ‘Activate’. 

The eMembership is for someone else and I can activate it

If you have made a booking at the same time as buying eMembership the eMembership can start ‘Today’ or on the date of your booking.  If you did not book a hostel and purchased eMembership on its own then the start date is ‘Today’ 

Please add the details for the eMembership holder being Name, Date of Birth, Address, Country of Residence (if your Country is not listed in the ‘Country of Residence’ dropdown please select ‘other’) and Email address and password for the member and select ‘Activate’.  Please note the email address needs to be unique for each holder.  If you add your email address then the eMembership will default to your name. 

The eMembership is for someone else.  Please send an activation email/I want to send them an activation email.

You will be asked to add the email address of the person the eMembership is for and then select ‘Send activation request’ this will then send them an email to activate the eMembership.

I have activated my eMembership but the details are incorrect?

If the details on the eMembership you have activated are incorrect you can amend the following by logging into your account on Hihostels.com and selecting ‘edit’

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Country of Residence
  • Email address

When you have made the necessary changes select ‘submit changes’

Can I cancel my eMembership?

If you have activated your eMembership it is not possible for it to be cancelled and refunded.  If you have not activated your eMembership please contact HI for further assistance.

I have not received my eMembership card yet?

You have purchased eMembership (electronic membership) which means you will not receive a card.  When you activate your eMembership you will receive an email to confirm the details which included your eMembership reference number.  Our hostels can also search for your details in our back office system if you do not have the email.  You can also see the details and print it again in your Profile area under the eMembership section.

Will I receive the 10% accommodation discount at all HI Hostels?

You will receive the discount as long as your booking was made on hihostels.com.  If you have made your booking on any other website we cannot guarantee your HI membership will be honoured.
