Covid info 26 March

Updated 26 March 2020

On 30 January, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Please check the WHO global advice, as well as your governmental or health advisory departments for travel guidance and health advice before travelling. We urge all customers to take the necessary precautions to stay safe and travel responsibly.

HI’s temporary cancellation policy applies from 26 March 2020

If you cannot travel to the hostel you have a booking for due to the current travel restrictions or if the hostel you were going to stay at is closed, then please follow these steps:

- Consider leaving your deposit with HI as a donation towards our charitable activities.

- Don’t cancel, postpone your stay. Contact the hostel to re-arrange a future stay. You will find the hostel contact details in your booking confirmation. Any amendment is at the hostel’s discretion and is not guaranteed - see Booking Terms & Conditions for full details.
Please do not contact Hostelling International to reschedule bookings as we do not have the capability to deal with such requests.

- If you are unable to contact the hostel or unable to re-arrange your booking then please approach HI at and we will credit your account with the value of your deposit.  This credit will be valid for 12 months from the date it was issued to you.  More updates on how this can be used in the future to follow.

Hostelling international and its Member organisations are all not-for-profit with a social purpose. This policy is designed to ensure we survive a turbulent time and we can continue to give young people the chance to travel and discover the world once it’s safe to do so again.

We hope you will understand and continue to support us at this time when we need it the most. We appreciate your patience and contributions.

What if the hostel I booked cancelled my booking?

Because of the ongoing situation, some local authorities are advising hostels to close and/or cancel bookings. If this has happened to you, the hostel should have contacted us prior to contacting you requesting that your deposit be credited to your account but if this is not the case please email with the email from the hostel so that we can credit your account with the value of your deposit.

Are you travelling to any of the countries listed below?

In the following countries/areas some or all hostels are closed for various durations, please contact the hostel before travelling to check:

Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czechia, Denmark, England & Wales, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Korea, Scotland, Spain, Thailand, Tunisia and USA.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience and look forward to welcoming you in our hostels once it’s safe to travel and socialise again.

New Bookings - From 6 April 2020

Please make sure you check Government travel restrictions before booking and travelling to a hostel. This should include where you are travelling from and travelling to. Travel may be permitted only for certain purposes and in particular, touristic travel may not be allowed. If there is no official restriction in place and it is your choice not to travel, then we would not be able to offer you a credit for your deposit.

For bookings made on or after 6 April 2020, please consider the risk of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and associated government measures, you may not be entitled to a credit if there is a restriction in place at the time you make the booking and you later decide to cancel your booking.
