Join the HI Community
At HI, we want everybody to be able to enjoy the real hostelling experience: more than a place to stay, this is about opening minds, meeting new people, cultural immersion and getting travellers involved in our global activities. We love travelling as much as you do, so we have high hostel standards wherever we expand on the planet, but more than where you rest your head, this is about taking something unforgettable away with you – wherever you come from, or are going next.

Step 1) Strap yourself to a beautiful stranger. Step 2) Throw yourself from a perfectly good aeroplane. Step 3) Freefall at 200kph from a whopping 12,000 or 15,000 feet before pulling the chute to enjoy unrivalled views of Wanaka’s lush valleys and mountains, lakes cradled by hills and cliffs, pristine rivers, tumbling glaciers and two of New Zealand’s titanic mountains: Aoraki Mount Cook and Mt Aspiring. (Skydiving—been there, done that? From late 2015, jump from a helicopter for a 12,000 foot heli-skydive.) Next, relax at one of the nearby historic pubs, then tuck into bed at YHA Wanaka.
Southern Lakes Festival of Colour
Also worth a look is the more low-key Southern Lakes Festival of Colour based in Wanaka with satellite events in Queenstown, Luggate, Hawea and Cromwell. Running in April, the music, theatre and dance festival bills itself as the best little arts festival in New Zealand.
Central Otago is the world’s most southerly wine region. Appellation Central runs seriously knowledgeable tasting tours through the area from Queenstown – with a focus on some of the planet’s best pinot noirs.
