Mountain biking in Nelson
Make a list of all the things you want to do in sunny Nelson (the city averages over 2,400 hours of sunshine per year) and make sure mountain biking is on the top of that list. With big hills and easy access to forest trails, Nelson is a worthy contender for the mountain bike capital of New Zealand. You could spend the rest of your life biking and exploring Nelson’s variety of trails that suit weekend warriors, hardened pros, cross country riders and downhillers. The region’s top two trails? The Heaphy Track was designed for hikers but is now open to mountain bikes during winter. And there’s the Dun Mountain Trail, easily the South Island’s best Mountain Bike track. Keen bikers are on staff at YHA Nelson and there’s easy riding access from the hostel door to local rides.
Nelson: Paragliding & hang gliding
Join the seabirds and tap into humanity’s fascination with flight. Go tandem paragliding and hang gliding with updraughts, ridges and thermals aplenty. A mix of adrenaline and serenity, paragliding and hang gliding suit the faint-of-hearts and the not-so-faint-of-hearts as both can be adrenaline fuelled or light. Here, you won’t be asked to run off a cliff, start an engine or carry a heavy frame. Simply strap in to your trusty pilot and enjoy the bird’s-eye-views over mountains, gold sand coastlines and three National Parks. Hang up your helmet at YHA Nelson and/or YHA Motueka and sleep tight, dreaming of flight.
Get into the groove of a new season at Marchfest held in March in sunny Nelson. The day-long event features homegrown musical talent, a beer line up of local, never-before-tasted-by-the-public-brew, wine, cider juices and regional cuisine. Highlights include a gourmet beer-matching lunch, regular brew talks and indie/world music gigs. Earlybird tickets in December.
Craft Brewing Capital: Nelson
Wellington may be the craft beer consumption capital of New Zealand, but Nelson bills itself as the craft brewing capital – a lot of hops are grown round there. JJ’s Quality Tours has an option that dips into some of the area’s best craft breweries.
