Nature in Kaikoura
If you’re a general fan of seafood and a specific fan of crayfish (lobster) and Paua (abalone), then Kaikoura should be on your radar. The coastal town and region heaves with seafood and is New Zealand’s mecca of marine experiences—specialising in the mammal variety. Whales, fur seals and dolphins live permanently in the coastal waters which means you can hop on a boat, a kayak or in an aeroplane to spot the these stars of the sea. If birds are more your thing, strap on binoculars for penguins, albatross, mollymawks and petrels. After your finished getting back to nature, get to YHA Kaikoura for beachfront views over the South Pacific and the Kaikoura mountain ranges.
YHA New Zealand Sustainability
YHA New Zealand is committed to environmental sustainability and helping protect and preserve New Zealand’s beautiful backyard. We’ve taken steps throughout our hostels to reduce waste, emissions, energy and water usage. Hostelling itself is a great example of environmental responsibility as it’s a form of low-impact travel, encouraging travellers to leave a smaller ‘footprint’ by sharing rooms and communal spaces. To help our guests reduce their ‘footprints’ even more, YHA started the Green Footprint Project whereby travellers can offset their environmental impact by purchasing native trees. Since 2004, 11,000 trees have been planted. That’s a whole lot of carbon reduction!
