The hostel is set in 1996 in dense forest near ocean, as a basement to explore 7,000-year-old Jomonsugi (large cryptomeria trees) and 1,936-meter mountain Miyanouradake which is listed in 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. There are also 4 hot springs near the hostel. The most famous one is Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen that is visible at low tide. Friendly local people are waiting for you.

Yakushima is a great place - and Yakushima YH is in the South of the island - in a very rural place. This has natural trade-offs. For a shorter stay, Miyanoura is more accessible - for a longer stay and visit to the South, Yakushima YHis a good option. Friendly staff, and Japanese meals also part of the package ... I was nearly a week on Yakushima and stayed in both.

The hostel is really beautiful, location is close to the waterfall (not walkable) and hot springs (2.5km away). However far to hiking areas and food, so be prepared if you plan on using the public bus. You can rent a car but need an international license. Staff are friendly but little english here.
