Siglufjörður Hostel

Hostel Siglufjörður

Hostelling International

Welcome to our hostel

The hostel is located at the centre of town, in an old house built as a hotel during the golden years of Siglufjörður. The surrounding nature is renowned for its beauty and is perfect for outdoor activities. Siglufjörður is a skier’s paradise, has outstanding slopes and surrounding valleys make great trails for cross-country skiing. The fjords and valleys in the area are popular for bird-watching and hiking.

The rooms are well equipped and comfortable and the common areas are great for relaxing or chatting to your fellow travellers.

Siglufjörður used to be the herring capital of Iceland and a thriving colourful town with a goldrush-like atmosphere. Signs of its past glory can still be seen in The Herring Era Museum, and breathe life into the remarkable past of the town which peaks during the Herring Adventure festival in August. The Folk Music festival is held by the Museum of Icelandic Folk Music in July.

It's really a super lovely hostel, almost more like a hotel with shared bathrooms. The building is nice from the outside and completely new and fancy renovated from the inside. Just double rooms as far as I've seen it, no dorms. Everything was new, modern and clean. Better than most guesthouses I've been to! There is a new and stylish bar down in the lobby which could be really cool as soon as it is established :-) Siglufj. doesn't offer many options for bars besides the exclusive Siglo hotel...

We had a nice, big, clean room, good beds, a good place to stay when you have a bad cold and it is raining heavily outside. Friendly host who gave us usefull information. The kitchen was under renovation, good idea to make the new one next door. I can recommend this hostel😊

In terms of the facilities, these were not acceptable. For use of a kitchen we were required to go to visit a property over the road. This kitchen was very poorly equipped, with no oven, very few cups, no kettle or toaster on one morning, and only two tables to sit at in an adapted dining area. Worse still, this Hostel is listed as a 'green hostel', and yet the kitchen included waste stacked up to the wall with no facilities for segregation and no information about sustainability practices.

There were no green practices. We were told to cook in an apartment across the road which was in a state of renovation. The cooking facilities were three electric rings. There was no dish soap, the refuse over-flowed onto the floor. There was no toaster until I asked for one, just plates, two cups and a few glasses. There were six chairs and two tables. On the 2nd morning the kettle and toaster had gone! The rooms were lovely.
