Hostel Kópasker

Hostelling International

Welcome to our hostel

Kópasker is a small village in the north-east part of Iceland. Its economy is built around services for the surrounding sheep farms. The hostel is located in the centre of the town with all necessary services close by. Approximately 33km from Kópasker is the village Ásbyrgi which is part of the National Park Jökulsárgljúfur.

In the National Park there are many interesting places like Hljóðaklettur and Forvöð. Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, but there are also smaller waterfalls in Jökulsá, like Hafragilsfoss and Vígabergsfoss.

Many species of interesting birds are found in Melrakkaslétta. Rauðinúpur (which is 30km from Kópasker hostel) and it is an ideal place for bird watchers. The best time of the year to see the birds are in May and September/October. At Snartastaðir there is a very good folk museum. The nearest nostels are Akureyri, 191km and Ytra Lón, 84km.

Make sure you have cash. The owner doesn't take cards. Although he is kind enough to let you stay and pay later at a bank, it does affect your traveling schedule a bit since many small towns you drive to don't have a bank. Even if they do, they close at 4pm! Very nice cat.

Absolutely beautiful, serene surroundings. Awesome beach with a lighthouse nearby. Would love to stay there again. Tips for fellow travelers : - BRING CASH. This hostel doesn't have a card machine. The host, Benedikt was kind enough to let me pay at a bank on the day after leaving. - Bring your own food, you can't buy anything nearby. - Consider going to Raudinupur cliffs (especially in May and September)

We loved our stay at Kopasker. It was very cozy and we enjoyed being in this part of the island, aside from tourism. Benedikt was a great host, he is very friendly and makes you feel welcome at all time. I defenitely want to go back there!
