HI-Downing is a great base from which to explore central New York State. Built in 1895, it features stained-glass windows and an ornate staircase.

The hostel offers a lounge with a couch, television, and movies to watch. There is a self-catering kitchen, laundry facilities and lockers available. Sheets are included in price.

The hostel is centrally located to the Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario, and the New York State Fair. Explore Syracuse's history at the Onondaga Historical Association, Erie Canal and Salt Museums, or St. Marie among the Iroquois. Visit a zoo; see a baseball game or the gorgeous Fall foliage. Downhill, cross-country skiing and skating are available nearby in the winter.

The Victorian House is beautiful, the stained glass stunning, the staff friendly, helpful and well informed, the renovated kitchen/dining in the basement spacious and well lighted. The walk into town passes some attractive houses, churches and businesses. Donna Baird, Ann Arbor, MI
