HI-Downing is a great base from which to explore central New York State. Built in 1895, it features stained-glass windows and an ornate staircase.

The hostel offers a lounge with a couch, television, and movies to watch. There is a self-catering kitchen, laundry facilities and lockers available. Sheets are included in price.

The hostel is centrally located to the Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario, and the New York State Fair. Explore Syracuse's history at the Onondaga Historical Association, Erie Canal and Salt Museums, or St. Marie among the Iroquois. Visit a zoo; see a baseball game or the gorgeous Fall foliage. Downhill, cross-country skiing and skating are available nearby in the winter.

After recent remodel, esp. kitchen, GREAT accommodations. Prior digs were very good but a bit dingy. I stayed here 4 previous years and was quite happy, but this year was very pleasantly surprised. Nice people, helpful. No internet, but library downtown is only an easy bus trip away.
