Hostelling International

Welcome to our hostel

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this hostel is closed until late spring.

Located in the historic Squilax General Store, the HI Shuswap Lake Hostel sits on the shores of Shuswap Lake, one of BC's most popular summer vacation destinations for swimming, canoeing, ziplining, golfing, whitewater rafting and hiking. Situated halfway between Banff and Vancouver, the hostel is in an ideal location for a stopover. We are in a wilderness setting but have hot running water, as well as a campfire pit and a native style sauna. The hostel dorm rooms are in three converted Canadian National Cabooses (rail cars). The private rooms are in the main building., As we are located directly on the lake, there is a wharf and free use of our canoe, as well as free use of a hiking self guided kit (daypack, binoculars, plant, bird and mammal guide books). A short walk or canoe ride through the forest will take you to a beaver's lodge (yes, the real animal!). Local events include rodeos, music festivals, Pow Wows (native drumming and dance competitions), and the Adam's River Salmon Spawning run. Organic grocery store on site. Tenting also available. Hostel pets on site. Hostel check-in is in the General Store. Ring doorbell on store door.

There was no locked door between the dorm and the highway and the hostel is located on the TransCanada highway so I didn't feel very safe. I ended up sleeping in a private rook in the house. The old train car smelled strange (like an old train!). The setting was lovely on the side of the lake and has a nice firepit, so if you're looking for a slightly quirky group camp-like experience, it would be good. If, however, you are just looking for a comfy bed for the night, I would suggest a private room, which were located in the house. Thats being said, i slept on a bunk bed which was very noisy when the person on the bottom bunk moved and some of the bars were very loose. I grabbed one for support whilst climbing down fron the bunk and it moved significantly. The host gave very good recommendations for local restaurants, grocery shops and siteseeing.

Blair was a very helpful and kind host. The fact she came and picked us up from the Greyhound stop in Chase and dropped us off was incredibly helpful. She even gave us a little tour of Chase which was lovely. The free canoe was a nice touch and the pancakes were exceptional. The cabooses were a very unique touch and of course the stay in general was excellent value for money. Can't pick any faults with the hostel or our stay, I just wish we stayed for longer.

This Hostel was a gem amongst our hostel experiences as it was a travel through time and yesteryear. Rustic, full of character and unique. Not a mainstream destination I would suggest, but for myself a "not to be missed nesting ". Blair was the personality of Hi Shaswap Lake Hostel and gave her time and knowledge to us that only travellers will appreciate. Thank you !!!! If the reader of my comments follows my advise, then stay for a few days and not just one night.
