Sausalito Hostel

Hostel Sausalito

Hostelling International

Welcome to our hostel

Marin Headlands, a comfortable hostel in a rustic setting, sits on a hillside in the Marin Headlands section of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.

The hostel itself is nice and spacious with a large kitchen, large reading room with couches, and a downstairs game room with foos ball, pool table, and a ping-pong table.

In the park just outside the door, you can hike the open meadows, bike the coastal mountainside, check out the operating Point Bonita lighthouse, tour military barracks and batteries from both world wars, see the nation's only officially restored Nike missile site, or head to one of many local beaches. Several other popular destinations, including Mount Tamalpais State Park and Muir Woods, where you can stand or hike among the majestic coastal redwoods are also nearby.

We are in a beautifully isolated area with very limited to no cell reception and no public transportation except for on Saturday and Sunday.

I have now stayed here for 7 nights in two separate trips. I feel like this hostel is a hidden gem in San Francisco. The Marin Headlands have such an interesting history, and there is so much to explore. You can go hiking, spend time at the beach, learn about US military history, or get some incredible views of the Golden Gate bridge. The hostel itself has a very nostalgic summer camp feel. Large groups are often hanging out in the dining area, someone may be playing the piano or guitars, and you'll find all types of people who all seem to get along and help each other out. If you are looking for immaculate accommodations, this may not be the place for you. The mattresses and carpet are pretty old, there is a mild smell in the rooms, and the bathrooms aren't perfect. That being said, overall it is very well maintained. Everything I needed was easily accessible and there were clear instructions on everything. The staff are friendly and helpful and make the whole process easy. Getting to the Hostel is a bit challenging as there is only one entrance (at the time of my stay, but they were doing roadwork on another possible entrance) and you have to go through a one-way tunnel. Also keep in mind that getting into the city requires crossing the Golden Gate, which currently costs just over $8 USD. I didn't have cell reception most of the way between the tunnel and the hostel, so make sure to print or write down directions. The wifi at the hostel worked well, although it was a bit slow when a large group of people was there. I plan to stay here again in the future, and hopefully next time I'll be bringing my whole family!
