Sausalito Hostel

Hostel Sausalito

Hostelling International

Welcome to our hostel

Marin Headlands, a comfortable hostel in a rustic setting, sits on a hillside in the Marin Headlands section of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.

The hostel itself is nice and spacious with a large kitchen, large reading room with couches, and a downstairs game room with foos ball, pool table, and a ping-pong table.

In the park just outside the door, you can hike the open meadows, bike the coastal mountainside, check out the operating Point Bonita lighthouse, tour military barracks and batteries from both world wars, see the nation's only officially restored Nike missile site, or head to one of many local beaches. Several other popular destinations, including Mount Tamalpais State Park and Muir Woods, where you can stand or hike among the majestic coastal redwoods are also nearby.

We are in a beautifully isolated area with very limited to no cell reception and no public transportation except for on Saturday and Sunday.

It's a great location! My main concern is that there is no way to ensure that the dishes are clean! There is no dishwasher and there are three sinks next to each other labeled something like sterilize, wash and rinse. No other instructions. At times the first sink (?sterilize? disinfect? I can't remember for sure the exact label) was partially full of dirty and tepid water. I'm sure people tried to be responsible, but really, it seems like it would be a great way to spread hepatitis!

Overall a great visit. I gave a down-check on cleanliness because several times I used a cup to make tea and noticed the water was sudsy due to detergent residue. I suspect many people washing their cups individually used a dollop of detergent from the plastic bottle, cold water to wash, and cold water to rinse. This doesn't do a good job of removing all the soap. Maybe post a notice with cartoons to show using hot water to wash & rinse to ensure all the soap gets removed.

The combination of mattress and wires makes sleeping a little bit uncomfortable. If I compare it to wooden bunk beds in HI Point Reyes, theirs are much more comfortable. But overall, I had a great stay, common area is spacious and comfortable, kitchen has everything (except for a good non sticky pan :P) and the location is amazing!!

This is a wonderful hostel and I will come again and will recommend it. Please put regular ladders on all the beds- it’s really hard to climb up the slats on the side if there’s no ladder- it hurts your feet, and I’m always afraid I’m going to fall. Also, please have more pillows available that aren’t feather pillows for those of us who are allergic to feathers. Also, the bathroom sinks are hard to use because you have to hold the faucet on with one hand the whole time. Please fix this! Thanks!

Everything was fine, comfort was minimal for me because I was in an upper bunk, shared room and late arrival and early departure after all were asleep and before they awoke.
