HI Santa Cruz is a picturesque cottage perched atop the historic Beach Hill neighbourhood. The hostel is in a convenient location, only two blocks from beaches, the wharf and the Boardwalk Amusement Park, and only 5 blocks to downtown. All public transportation is within walking distance.

This Santa Cruz hostel offers dorms and private rooms. Guests can enjoy the pretty gardens, common room, kitchen and dining hall. With Internet and laundry facilities available on site, this is the perfect base for exploring the city.

One of the highlights of Santa Cruz is the Beach Boardwalk which dates from 1907 and is the oldest beachfront amusement park on the West Coast. The boardwalk has a glorious old-school Americana vibe and its most famous rides include the half-mile long Giant Dipper, a vintage 1924 wooden roller coaster, and the 1911 Looff carousel – both National Historic Landmarks.

This place was in a charming neighborhood, and the cottages were very cute. However it was confusing to find out where to check in because there were so many different buildings, and i didn't see one that was marked as office or anything. Also, parking was an issue. They will sell you a parking pass for metered parking nearby, but I was unable to find any of those places open. I had to park about 4 blocks away in an area where I had to move my car by 9:00 am. Rooms were a bit cramped.

Attraction tip

The Santa Cruz Mission was fascinating! Wilder Ranch had 4th of July live music & demonstrations of historic farm crafts. We rode our bikes 15 miles north to Swanton Berry Farm to pick strawberries & eat chocolate-covered-berries. Terrific!

Budget meal tip

I've already forgotten the name of the restaurant we ate at.
