Overall we were satisfied with our stay at HI San Diego Downtown but our room felt a little run down, the bathroom in particular, and not 100% clean (the towels we got were also quite bad, too soft and left traces of fabric all over you when you dried yourself with them). The worst of it though was the noise coming from the street, there were homeless people banging buckets just outside of our window and the party goers screaming until late in the night every night.

Budget meal tip

I had some wonderful meals at the Sol Cal Café, which is all vegetarian/organic and is reasonably priced. It's at 9th and Island (or is it 9th and J? something like that) I highly recommend it!!

Where next?

I especially recommend the HI hostels in Santa Cruz and San Francisco.
