Winters at HI-Rampart Creek Wilderness Hostel are a magical time filled with the jingling of carabiners and ice screws and stories of victory and defeat at the hands of the frozen foe.

The Rampart Creek Wilderness Hostel’s facilities include a common room, self-catering kitchen, Internet access, bicycle storage and sauna to relax in after a hard days climb. Book ahead to avoid any disappointment, as these smaller hostels are very popular in both winter and summer.

Rampart Creek has over 150 ice climbs within 30 minutes’ drive. Climbs range from a few for the timid or beginner up to those for extreme (or insane) climbers, with new mixed routes popping up each year. Not into ice climbing? Well, ice climbers go to bed early and tend to leave before most sane people are up, leaving plenty of time to relax at the hostel, enjoy the sauna and check out some skiing or snowshoeing in the area

We had a great time. It was a very special occasion as 15 of us stayed at Rampart Creek for Thanksgiving, and we even had a full Turkey Dinner feast. The hostel manager was very friendly, but there was some initial confusion about room assignments and distribution. Generally, the head office needs to be more aware of the way the different hostels are set up so that they can give better advice and avoid confusing the guests.
