Winters at HI-Rampart Creek Wilderness Hostel are a magical time filled with the jingling of carabiners and ice screws and stories of victory and defeat at the hands of the frozen foe.

The Rampart Creek Wilderness Hostel’s facilities include a common room, self-catering kitchen, Internet access, bicycle storage and sauna to relax in after a hard days climb. Book ahead to avoid any disappointment, as these smaller hostels are very popular in both winter and summer.

Rampart Creek has over 150 ice climbs within 30 minutes’ drive. Climbs range from a few for the timid or beginner up to those for extreme (or insane) climbers, with new mixed routes popping up each year. Not into ice climbing? Well, ice climbers go to bed early and tend to leave before most sane people are up, leaving plenty of time to relax at the hostel, enjoy the sauna and check out some skiing or snowshoeing in the area

Ken was very welcoming. The place is a bit remote for people without car. As it's a wilderness HI hostel you don't have to expect a lot of comfort but sure, you will meet the greatest people there, talking around the fireplace eating marshmallows! Great experience!

Where next?

I'd stay at least two nights (I was only there one) and then head to whiskey jack in Yoho.
