Best shower and most comfortable bed of a 6 week trip. I may have missed it but I'm not sure if there was a compost bin on site which would have been good.

Excellent staff who were very welcoming, had great information and made our stay very comfortable. Great to be able to use the facilities for a small fee between checking out and getting the 10pm ferry.

A nice traditionally organised hostel in a relatively far out location as the word "Pioneer" in its name suggests . The staff always dealt with any problems/requests quickly. Space for hostellers with their own two/three man tents in an overflow area on the lawn if all the beds have been booked. The only drawback I found was that a decision appeared to have had been made not to provide a brush in any of the lavatories, that I did not take up with them.

The attitude of a member of staff was extremely mercenary ,after checking out I was informed that I would be charged 10$ to sit in the hostel even though it was raining heavily. This has soured my experience of using HI Hostel .

We appreciate your feedback on our 10CAD day rate and are sorry to hear that this small fee for using our facilities soured your experience. For most hotels, guesthouses and Bed&Breakfasts it is more than common that you are expected to leave the premises after you checked out in the morning. We stored your luggage FREE of charge until your ferry left at night. We are more than happy to accommodate guests who would like to continue using our facilities after check out for a couple of hours to wait for their ferry/plane, etc. but there is a small fee involved for this. Our 10CAD day rate is charged for guests who would like to use our facilities (i.e. use of bathrooms, showers, kitchen, communal area with TV and internet/Wifi, etc.) AFTER they checked out in the morning. We do not consider a 10CAD fee exorbitant or mercenary. This small fee is simply to cover our expenses for the use of our facilities for another couple of hours after your check out. It is pretty much the same you would pay for a muffin plus coffee at a coffeeshop (excl. tipp) if you decided to hang out there for about 6-8 hours to wait for your ferry.
