I was in new building and this was my third HI experience in US after Boston and Seattle. And I have to say this one gives Boston a very tough competition for the best HI hostel in US.

Staff seemed very uninterested and unsmiling upon check-in. I was put into an old building that is nothing like the photos on the website. Room felt dumpy and window was right by smoking area. Water in bathroom sink and old tub/shower had to be left on a long time to get hot. I could've used more coffee and more smiles. I will go to more HI hostels, but if this was my first HI experience it would have been my last.

It was generally hard to get a seat at the most popular breakfast time. The breakfast, whilst simple, was appreciated and a welcome start to the day. Happy hour 3pm to 6pm is far too early. In SF, it runs 6-8 and has many patrons. Your time is too early for those who are still chasing activities and city highlights.
