It is the perfect base for exploring Lake Kerkini (a Ramsar Site) and its surrounding plains and hilly forests. The largest national park in Greece and one of the top birding sites in Europe, it is wonderful at any time of year not only for birds but for a wealth of plants and other wildlife. Getting to the hostel: Thessaloniki (SKG) 105km very day there are 3-4 connections from Thessaloniki to Heraclea and Sidirokastro departing from the central bus station Thessaloniki (desk of Serres Prefecture). From Serres there is regular bus service to Heraclea especially until noon. If you arrive at Heraclea by bus we will make sure to wait for us at the station. For exact time schedules contact the KTEL Serres.KTEL Serres Irakleia 5km http://ktelbus.com/?module=default&pages_id=83&lang=en From Thessaloniki airport and Athens : Take the road to Serres (after entering the prefecture of Serres at the first intersection (immediately after the mountains and before the bridge over Strymonas River) turn right towards Irakleia and Lake Kerkini. You enter the main road and go through the villages Zefgolateio Himarros and reach Lithotopos. Go through Lithotopos and at the dam of the lake turn right at the street (above the dam) to Irakleia. 6km after this point turn left to Chrysochorafa. Feature of the last crossroad is the factory with bricks on your left hand. Access by train is good and maybe more interesting because of cheap fares and many stops in the wetland. From whichever direction you come to it is convenient to get off at Sidirokastro. From there you come to Chrysochorafa either by taxi or we arrange to pick you up if we are able.http://www.trainose.gr/en/
