Grundarfjörður HI Hostel

Wind down from a busy day of exploring the Snæfellsnes peninsula by kicking back in the colorful houses of Grundarfjörður HI Hostel and becoming neighbors with the mountain of Kirkjufell, the Church Mountain. The area has inspired many authors such as Jules Verne and noble prize winner Halldór Laxness and it´s easy to see why- the mountains on one side and the ocean on the other make for the stunning landscape. You can explore the town or watch a movie in the TV room, perhaps The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which was filmed in and around Grundarfjörður.

In the area:

  • Snæfellsjökull National Park contains the glacier of the same name as well as lava fields. Here was the primary setting for the novel ‘A Journey to the Centre of the Earth’.
  • Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum gives a live presentation on the history of shark fishing in Iceland- tasting included.
  • It is a short drive to the towns of Stykkishólmur, Arnarstapi, and Búðir, with its mysterious black church.
  • Many whale and birdwatching and watching tours depart from the town, giving you the chance to see orcas, dolphins, and waterfowl.
