Attraction tip

Temple of Heaven park at 7am for Tai Chi, music etc - locals enjoying themselves. Great Wall 3 hour hike in less tourist area. Metro system excellent - go to Summer Palace by the lake

Budget meal tip

There's lots of good food. Just go down the street and sample something. I stuck to the nearby McDonald's though, as I've experienced a bit of gutrot of late, here in China.

Attraction tip

I actually hate Beijing - give me Shanghai any day - wonderful place. But Beijing hostels organise tours to the Great Wall. Check out Mutianyu - it's fantastic. As for Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City - there are few more boring places!
