Beijing Far East International Youth Hostel is a lovely traditional style hostel, set in a quiet, Hutong neighbourhood and only a 10 minute walk away from Tian’anmen Square, Qianmen Business Center and the Forbidden City. The hostel has a rich history, being the former residence of a warlord in the beginning of the last century.

Beijing Far East International Youth Hostel is close to many local restaurants, small stores, a post office, Bank of China and supermarkets. The hostel is in a traditional Chinese courtyard, offers a TV and common room and has Internet access.

The hostel also provides bicycle rentals so that visitors can enjoy the Hutong area at their own pace. Other sights worth seeing close to the hostel include, The Great Wall, Shichahai Lakes, the few remaining Hutong neighbourhoods and The Legation Quarter for nightlife.

Hardly a hostel but a not fully converted hotel, there are real hostels around. Location at a first glance doesn't seem convenient (looks like an old suburb) but if you walk a bit it ends being nice. No tourist information provided at any moment, at all. Staff is not very friendly. Paid locker room

Budget meal tip

There's lots of good food. Just go down the street and sample something. I stuck to the nearby McDonald's though, as I've experienced a bit of gutrot of late, here in China.
