Achiote Hostel

Hostel Achiote

Welcome to our hostel

Live and feel Panama at the Centro el Tucan in the rural community of Achiote, one of the best places in the world for birdwatching. Here you can enjoy nature, peace and quiet and get involved with local community activities.

The Centro el Tucan has gardens designed to attract birds and butterflies, with a trail and deck with a view over the valley. It is an ideal base to explore the Trogon Trail and the San Lorenzo Protected Area, and Achiote also has coffee farms, trails and decks and an intriguing community museum where you can learn about our local culture.

Nearby are the Gatun Locks at the Atlantic end of the Panama Canal and the Observation deck for the Canal expansion, Fort San Lorenzo World Heritage Site, and the beautifully untouched Caribbean beaches at Piña.

If you want to stay upclose to nature then this is the place for you. The managress was very helpful and informative about the area. We where there for the birdwatching, which was excellant from the road and nearby trails. Fort Sherman and Fort San Lorenzo are both worth visiting.

El Toucan is out in the middle of no where. I do wish they'd have had some hummingbird feeders there, that and more bird feeders of any kind. The place is relaxed but it isn't a party hostel at all. The restaurant down the road, Dona's, in Achiote, it is good and inexpensive. The walk along the highway between El Toucan and the restaurant will almost always turn up a new bird or two or three. Achiote itself is sort of a dump, but the people there are quite friendly. '

The lady who runs the hostel, Mary Lou, is lovely. Trash is sorted out here, etc. Michele, who was working there....she was terrific. I do wish that they had some hummingbird feeders up....which they didn't. The area, around the town of Achoite, it is full of interesting birds. The town is kind of dumpy but nice, and there is a good local restaurant there, Dona's....good food and inexpensive. The people in Achoite are friendly and we always felt safe.
