This hostel is a masterpiece. The architects who created it, Buchner & Bründler, are pioneers of innovative and modern architecture. New features are combined with classic elements at Basel Youth hostel. Together with its construction, these architects were also responsible for the Swiss Pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai, making them experts in the field of global design.

This hostel welcomes guests from all over the world. The new building was reopened with 234 beds in different room categories (from double room to a room for 6 people). The entrance lobby has an impressive, and stylishly open plan finish owing to the transparent walls of the reception area, lounge and dining room. The combination of old and new features can be seen from the outside and experienced inside; - everything is based on high structural and artistic standards. The rooms are now smaller and cosier, but still leaving ample space for guests’ comfort.

Great hostel in a great location with friendly staff. My only discomfort: It was unusually hot this summer (not their fault), and it was a little hot in the room even with the windows open. Maybe fans available for renting for a night would be good.

Budget meal tip

Unfortunately this hostel does not have a guest kitchen and the hostel dinner option is expensive / poor value. Best option: get something ready to eat from a supermarket.
