Ajdovščina, a land of active experiences
Ajdovščina is situated in the heart of Vipava valley, a green and fertile land, which provides visitors with a wide palette of experiences for people of all tastes. Discover the beauty of Vipava valley from the seat of a bicycle: ride along the Hubelj and Vipava Rivers, cycle through orchards and vineyards over the Vipava Hills or climb the Trnovo Plateau and Hrušica.
In the embrace of the Lipizzaner
The easiest way to reach Lipica is by motorway Ljubljana – Trst (Trieste) at the exit “Sežana – vzhod” and then just follow the signs for the remaining 5 kilometers. The stud farm at Lipica is the original stud farm where the bread of Lipizzaner began and it’s among the oldest cultivated horse breeds in the world. With a tradition of almost four and a half centuries it is among the oldest stud farms in the world as well and one of the most beautiful cultural-historical heritage sights of Slovenia, offering a home to 350 white horses.
Vipava Valley - the land of sun, wine and sports activities
The Vipava Valley is a wine-growing region with fertile soil and has always attracted people to come and live here. Historians assume that the valley had already been inhabited before Christ, perhaps even in the Late Stone Age. Archeological sites show that it reached its full bloom under the Roman Empire. The valley has a rich cultural legacy, reflected in the manors, castles, numerous churches, painted with great works of art and galleries. One of them is the Pilon Gallery, which contains artistic works of the great artist and the native of Ajdovščina, Veno Pilon. The legacy is also shown in the interesting architecture, the well-preserved fortress Castra and entire settlements, considered to be cultural monuments, such as the villages of Vipavski Križ, Šmarje, Šturje, etc.
Vipava Valley – stunning views & breathless descents
Cycling with a View: The selected paths snake over very diverse terrain and are appropriate for all kinds of difficulty levels as well as different levels of physical condition. Along the trails, there is plenty of opportunity to see the local natural and cultural sights and you can also stop at any one of the many farms. So magnificent and awesome, say many. And indeed, it is so. Each traveller, may he be on his way from the central Slovenia towards the coast or from the western border to the Slovene capital will stop for a minute to admire Nanos. Then there is the Vipava River which comes to life from under the very mountain and created this unique valley millions of years ago, Paradise itself, on its way to the Soča.
