Check out our answers to the most common questions on Tripbooks.

What is a Tripbook?

A Tripbook is a collection of related web links, images and text that someone has gathered from around the internet. There are two types of Tripbooks: HI Tripbooks, created by Hostelling International staff from around the world, and traveller Tripbooks, created by travellers like you. HI Tripbooks display the Hostelling International logo and contain travel inspiration and hostel information for the destinations where we have hostels. Traveller Tripbooks display the name of the person who created them, along with the date and usually contain that person’s travel ideas for a particular trip or destination.

How can I use a Tripbook?

Tripbooks can be used to collect anything, but most people use them to collect ideas for a trip or dream holiday: places you’d like to stay, things you would like to see or do, restaurants to try, transport options - anything related to the destination or locations on that journey. You can add or remove things from your Tripbook at any time, so you may use a Tripbook for planning before you go and then use it as a memory book of your experiences once you get back. You can choose to make your Tripbook public - see Who can see my Tripbook? if you wish, and then it can become inspiration for others who may want to do the same exciting things you did.

You can also use other people’s Tripbooks as a starting point for your own. You can save individual items or an entire Tripbook, and then edit it to make it tailored to you.

How can I create a Tripbook?

Anyone can create and store as many Tripbooks as they like on hihostels.com. All you need is a Hostelling International account (you can create one if you have an email address, or a Facebook, Twitter or Google account). Once you have logged in to our website, click on Create My Tripbooks to get started.

You can also create Tripbooks by clicking on the blue heart icon to add a hostel or travel idea to a Tripbook. Once you click on the heart, you will have the option of creating a new Tripbook to store this item, or adding it to an existing Tripbook (if you have created Tripbooks already).

If you find a traveller or HI Tripbook that already contains a lot of the things that you would like in your own Tripbook, you can click the Save button in the top right corner of that Tripbook to make a copy for yourself. Then, you can add or remove items from your copy to make your Tripbook exactly as you want it.

What are Tripbook Destinations and Areas of interest?

When you create a Tripbook, you can choose to tag the Tripbook with Destinations and/or Areas of Interest that your Tripbook relates to. These tags are used for searching and filtering on our website. For example, if you make a Public Tripbook about Paris, you can tag it with the Destination Paris and this will allow other people to find and get inspiration from your Tripbook if they do a search for Paris.

If your Tripbook is about great places to eat in Paris, you can also tag it with the Food lovers Area of Interest. This means that people who search for Paris, and then filter these results for Food lovers, will be able to see your Tripbook, along with any others that are tagged with both Paris and Food lovers.

We are also looking at ways that these tags can help customise your experience on our website, to highlight the things that are relevant to your preferences. We hope to launch these additional features soon.

How can I add something to my Tripbook? And what can I store?

There are two ways you can add things to your Tripbooks. If you’re on our website, you can add things to your Tripbooks by clicking the blue heart icon. If you’re anywhere else on the web, you can use the Add an entry bookmarklet  – see What is the Add an entry bookmarklet (button), and how does it work? to add things.

Whenever you add something to your Tripbook, you will create an individual entry in that Tripbook. An entry always has a URL (web link) and a title, which is whatever name you want to assign to the link, usually something memorable to you. You can also choose to assign a photo to the entry as well, to make your Tripbook look good and to spark your memory about this particular entry. The system will allow you to choose from any of the main images on that web page, if you like. And last but not least, you can also add your own text comment or description of the entry.

Please ensure you have read the Tripbooks Terms & Conditions which explain what is and isn’t allowed to be added to your Tripbooks.

What is the Add an entry bookmarklet (button) and how does it work?

The Add an entry bookmarklet is a button that you can add to your web browser’s bookmarks (or Favourites) bar. You can get it on the Create My Tripbooks homepage. Simply click and drag the button to your browser’s bookmarks bar: usually a little + sign will appear to show it has been added. Read this FAQ if you can’t see it -  I tried to put the Add an entry button in my browser, but it’s not there. Why?

Once you have the Add an entry button in your browser, it will be there for you to use anytime. So, if you are on a web page anywhere on the internet and you would like to add that page to your Tripbook, simply click the Add to Tripbook button and paste the URL into the box. Then, follow the steps shown to add the item - How can I add something to my Tripbook? And what can I store?

I tried to put the Add an entry button in my browser, but it’s not there. Why?

First, make sure you have your browser’s bookmarks bar (also called Favorites bar) turned on and visible. Here are the steps for some of the most common web browsers:

Chrome

Firefox

Internet Explorer

Safari

If you can see the bookmarks bar, but you cannot see the Add an entry button, try adding it again. When you add it this time, try to ensure you are dragging to a location on the bar which will be visible, usually the left side is best. Sometimes if you have a lot of items in your bookmarks bar, it may show only the first few items (from the left). In that case, you may find there is a little arrow on the far right of the bookmarks bar. You can click this arrow to show the hidden bookmark bar items.

If you are using a browser on a smartphone or tablet, you may not be able to store bookmarklets. Refer to the device or app instructions/help pages to confirm.

Who can see my Tripbook?

When you create a Tripbook, you can choose to make it Public or Private. You can also change these privacy settings at any time by clicking Edit Tripbook.

If you choose to make the Tripbook Public, anyone who visits our website may view your Tripbook and the contents. Your Tripbook may appear in the search results for destinations and/or interests, if you have tagged your Tripbook (see What are Tripbook Destinations and Areas of interest?) You can also share your Public Tripbook with anyone, such as a travel companion or link to it through your favourite social media site, to show all your friends your exciting trip ideas.

If you choose to make the Tripbook Private, only you will be able to see what is in the Tripbook. You may choose to keep a Tripbook Private while you are working on it, but make it Public once you are finished. Or, you may choose to keep a Tripbook Private forever, as a place to store your own personal travel ideas and inspirations.

Be careful about what you put in a Tripbook, especially one that you make Public. For example, if you are planning to meet a friend while on your trip, you should not put this friend’s telephone number or address on a Tripbook that may be visible to others. As a rule, don’t put any sensitive information in a Tripbook, even if it’s Private to you. Although we take all reasonable precautions to ensure your Private Tripbook stays Private, it’s better to err on the side of caution.

Why has (part of) my Tripbook been removed?

The most likely reason for the removal any Tripbook content is that it has been reported to us or we have identified that it is in breach of our Tripbook Terms & Conditions. Hostelling International exists to connect people and cultures through affordable travel and we welcome all races, nationalities, sexes and economic class.
