While you are staying in one of our Amsterdam hostels you should take advantage of the small scale of the Netherlands and the excellent transport network to explore some of the attractions outside the main city.
If you seek to get a feel for Dutch culture and the scenic countryside then you should plan a few day trips from your hostel. Amsterdam is a hub that provides easy access to a range of highlights from lakes, flower markets and miniature theme parks to traditional cheese porters and their infinite flavours of cheese.
Day Trip to Lake Ijssel
We’ve seen many guests at our Amsterdam hostels challenge themselves to cycle around the largest Dutch lake, the Ijsselmeer. At 439 kilometres all the way around you will look forward to resting your aching muscles in a superb hostel. Amsterdam is a mere 20-minute train ride from this stunning lake and it’s bike route that will take you through lovely scenery, historical fishing ports and towns via quiet roads and tracks.
Day Trip to Madurodam Miniature Park
The people who come through the doors of our Amsterdam hostels quite often are searching for the unique and quirky that defines a national character. We recommend packing a picnic lunch and heading off to Madurodam to see the Dutch world in miniature. Visitors can load cargo ships in the small scale version of Rotterdam port; taxi planes down the Schipol Airport runway or try their hand at holding back the floods by operating the Oosterscheldekering storm surge barrier!
Day Trip to Aalsmeer
Venture half an hour out of the city centre and you can find yourself in Aalsmeer where you will be overwhelmed with a selection of flowers to decorate the room in your hostel. Amsterdam is famous for tulips but the nation’s floral obsession goes even further in this Dutch town. Here you can attend the world’s largest flower auction and explore the largest flower capital in the world.
Day Trip to Alkmaar
Not all our guests are into flowers but come to stay in an Amsterdam hostel so that they can have access to some regional culinary traditions. We always advise these gastro-adventurers to spend a morning or afternoon in the city of Alkmaar where they can find one of the last cheese markets that not only offers every kind of cheese you can imagine but also supports the traditional cheese porters who will turn the sale of their products into a fantastic show.
