Guimarães (Portugal) |
|
Guimarães is quite rightly known as the cradle of Portugal. It is said that King Afonso Henriques was born here and also that it was at Guimarães that Portugal first became an independent nation, after the Battle of St Mamede in 1128. This town is also the birthplace of a modern and comfortable Youth Hostel which is right next to the historic centre of Guimarães - considered World Heritage since 2001. Once you're all settled, climb the hill to the castle, then walk down towards the Dukes' Palace, and finally sit comfortably at one of the outdoor cafés in Largo da Oliveira.
