This hostel seemed as though it used to be very good, but just hasn't kept up with changes. Now that the railway station has shifted away, this hostel is in an area that is a long way out of town. The area is also being renovated and much of it replaced with newer structures. It is hard to imagine that this will not happen to the hostel. Also, it is very much geared to internal Chinese tourism - no problem at all with that - but this focus made it a poor choice for my first booked accommodation as an independent, solo, traveller.

This is a beautiful hostel but the location makes it a terrible place to stay. It takes about 30 minutes by bus or taxi to get downtown and there is no place even close to the hostel to walk around at night. Another bad thing that will clear up eventually is the new glue/formaldehyde smell in the rooms since it is so new. I had a headache after the first night and had to check out. I was much happier in the center of town. The restaurant downstairs is very good and they will bring the food up to the hostel's dining room which is very convenient.

The young man at the desk (unfortunately we didn't get his name) was very helpful in getting us around town and obtaining train tickets back to Beijing. He was the reason we stayed two nights. The room was unusual with a glass bathroom in one corner. Neat! The hostel brochure was misleading because it looked like it was within walking distance of the train station and it really wasn't.

We have another hostel at the most beautiful section in Qinghai Lake.Qinghai Sangzhu Youth Hostel is the first youth hostel in Qinghai province, which has obtained favor and trust from domestic and foreign travelers. It is named after Tibetan-May all your wish come true. It offers a stage to help travelers realize their dreams for Qinghai- Tibet Plateau. The Tibetan style decoration, classic music and bar make travelers feel like to cross the space time and shuttle between the old and modern. The hostel periodically organizes self-service journey to Tai Er Si Temple, Qing Hai Hu Lake, Kan Bu La, Gang Shi Ka Snow Mountain, Tibet, Nepal and India.
