The host did not seem to know we were coming even though we had booked, which was disappointing considering we arrived late at night. There were some odd rules around using power sockets which was inconvenient given we were heading to the salar. There was a very limited period of hot water on the afternoon (we ended up staying two nights) and it would have been nice if the host told us when it was ready rather than us having to keep asking. Finally, we were locked in from the outside during the night so when we had to go out and meet a friend coming off a bus, we couldn't get out until the host woke up and came and unlocked the door.
The building is actually rather nice. But the staff makes sure you feel like in a prison... And the bed was really worn down. Middel of the mattress some 20cm lower than the outskirts. I later switched to Hotel Julia, only 15 Bolivianos more but breakfast included, cable TV and friendly staff!
This place is a shame for HI...
This hostel didn't check their emails and so therefore didn't know we were arriving at 3am (we got a late train). We had to wake them up and they were grumpy! The toilets left a lot to be desired... and you can only shower for 5 mins max at an allotted time in the mornings. Too many rules but not enough charm for you to not mind! Uyuni is overpriced because it's a essential stopover destination but if you can find anywhere else I would.
It was very basic but it was also inexpensive and near to the train station. The showers were only available from 830am-6pm which made it a little hard to get ready for the tour at 10am but the staff was helpful in getting them going.
We got a doubleroom as we had prebooked. It was small and had a wierd smell. There was no heat whatsoever and we even had to ask the staff to turn on the water (which was icy cold). Only one little toilet without a lock or light. If you wanted to take a shower, it had to be between 8.30 and 6pm, and you had to get the key from the staff...could not be bothered with that. Only one shower allowed pr. night - for 5 min or you have to pay extra 10 bol. By far one of the worst placed we have stayed in Bolivia and also one of the most expensive.
