Pity the hostel is so far from the I-site and the supermarket. Had to hire a cab to get me back to the I-site for my bus as it was too far with heavy luggage. Loved the garden, though. Maybe a deal could be done so that Inter City pick up and drop off at the YHA?
Hostel Overview
Looking for comfort and chill out space. Nestled in a beautiful garden setting just a 5 minute walk from the centre of Tauranga. FREE carparking, SKY TV, and a 4 star Qualmark rating makes us the perfect home base while you explore our beautiful Bay of Plenty.This warm modern Hostel is an inner city garden oasis, surrounded by mature trees – look out for the signs that label our native fauna in Maori and English. Guests can explore the delightful gardens and admire the quirky hidden garden art, tucked away around every corner. We have plenty of hammocks, sun lounges and picnic tables where you can chill out in the sun or the shade and appreciate a sense of calm and relaxation right in the heart of Tauranga.
YHA Tauranga has a large fully equipped kitchen including baking equipment, microwave, electric oven, gas hobs, rice cooker, pizza oven and sandwich maker. Plenty of food storage space and a large double fridge help to ensure an exceptional cooking experience. Our common rooms are open 24 hours so you can access the facilities in them anytime day or night. Facilities in the kitchen, dining room and TV area include Internet (CD Burning, Skype phone and card reader), Wireless Hot Spot, Sky TV with 11 channels, card phone and outside; a gas BBQ. We have a small shop and free off and on street car parking. We also provide free for your use: mini putt, badminton, soccer, croquet and volleyball equipment, video movies, fans for your room, umbrellas on wet days, alarm clocks, a well stocked travellers library, book exchange, guitar, board games and fresh growing herbs.
Each bedroom is named after a New Zealand native tree. Read about the botanical and medicinal purposes of each tree, for both Maori and European settlers when you check into your room. Some of these trees can also be found in the garden. All our rooms are individually heated. Private rooms are spacious with towels supplied free of charge. Shared rooms are supplied with free linen and blankets.
No queuing for hot showers or toilets here as we have one shower and toilet for every eight guests. We know about security too, that’s why our six bed shared rooms have individual lockers for valuables. We also have coin operated lockers and free lockers available at reception. The rooms all have individual locks and you a given a security code for 24 hour access to the hostel. We know that when you don't have to worry about your stuff, you can really start enjoying yourself.

Tauranga is one of New Zealand’s 'newest' cities. Set on the waterfront, Tauranga is a very walkable city, rich in cultural history and abundant in beaches, bush and birdsong. Take a stroll along the Strand for a world of tastes and it's also a cheap, easy city to get around.
YHA Tauranga is only a five minute walk from the Central Business District, where you can find an extensive range of restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and bars as well as the local bus depot and cinema complex. The Tauranga Yoga Centre is conveniently located right next door, right next to a dance studio offering Ceroc Swing dance lessons. Both welcome the casual user. Two doors down the road we have a monthly Musical Variety evening with great local bands and talented singers and two local art centres right next door. Staff are extremely knowledgeable about the Bay of Plenty’s, tours and activities. We have information on local tracks, tramps and day walks. Running adjacent to the hostel is a two hour loop walk on our local estuary boardwalk great for bird watching or jogging. The walkway meanders amongst the mangrove forest and over the water giving you lots of opportunity to see local birdlife and fauna. We have extensive information on local activities from blokarting, learning to surf, horse riding, jet skis, water skiing, tandem skydiving, scuba lessons, kayaking, and kite surfing right through to swimming with the dolphins or learning to pilot a plane. We are close to the Airport so you can take advantage of the stunning views whilst experiencing the thrill of piloting a plane yourself, tandem skydiving or a "Mash" helicoptor ride.
