This hostel can not be called HI hostel, at least don't match the standard of Hihostel chain. I waited about 10 minutes for checkin lady in the lobby but she seems still was busying on her facebook..(she even didn't talk to me first).then I talked to her first...she told me my 4 bed room is not available upon my booking, she said she can give me a discount for staying 6 bed room....the room was terrible...an other old guy occupied the whole lockers! she said she would check and ask him which one i can use, I waited for another 10 minutes and she didn't come back, I went downstairs and saw she was still busy on facebook.....then I asked her how much should pay? she said 40 BRL!! that's the normal price, I asked her for her promise, she said she meant she won't charge me 45 BRL which was 4 bed room price....so ridiculous...finally the boss who doesn't speak English even want to charge me the whole 6room price even I paid the 10% deposit on the website!!! Choose others if you can!

It's incredible how everything you said is a lie! The check in lady was talking to other 4 guests when you arrived, and was giving them attention. When she finished talking to them, she talked to you about not having the 4 bed room available. And you said it was OK! Afterwards you went downstairs and started yelling at her! Just so you know, it was confirmed by our internal security system that she wasn't at her facebook account. We do a very serious job here, in order to follow the principles and rules of the Hostelling Internation system, that is focused in treating right our guest and offering the best service. We also saw your comments about other hostels and maybe it's necessary that you do a psycological evaluation.

Great location and staff, but it´s falling short in cleanliness.

I ended up cancelling my reservation at Cidade Maravilhosa Hostel, so cannot comment on it. However, the hostel did make it difficult to cancel - I called, but they said they could not cancel the reservation by phone. Instead, I would have to send them an email. I never received an email confirmation of the cancellation.

We meet the very friendly staff (Carlos & Michael)who gave us tips on what to do around in a budget. The location end up actually being perfect, close to Gloria Metro station in walking distance to the city centre and right next to Lapa for really great parties on the weekend!!... we end up staying there all that we had planned plus an extra night. The rooms are pretty standard but comfortable (except bring your own pillow!!), breakkie was a great addition and we meet great people over there!!...Obviously, you are in Rio so you need to take care, dont look like a tourist and if going out at night go with a group... just have common sense and you will have a great time!!... we did it all and nothing happend to us!!... all and all we spend a great time in rio at Ciudade Maravilhosa!!

I've been in several Hostels in Brazil and abroad and, for sure, it was the best stay ever. The hostel is very well located, in a walking distance from Lapa, where the nightlife is and also near to the subway. Also, the the staff was amazingly friendly. We spent a really good time with them going to the Salgueiro's samba school. Simply amazing.
