Thi was the worst HI Hostel I've stayed in. I've stayed in 2 others in Europe and 5 in the US. There was virtually no security. Anyone at any time can walk into the lobby and upstairs without needing to be buzzed in or need of a key to get upstairs. There is only one key per room so if someone is in there the room is left unlocked. Anyone can come and go at will. The only lockers in the room are tiny and nowhere near big enough for the majority of a persons stuff even with just a small backpack to be locked up. There are lockers in the basement that are large enough but half of them were not working & cost €2 to use. You have to use a token that you can get from the front desk, they don't tell you that untill after you go downstairs and discover it for yourself & come back up to ask.
As for me, scandinavian hostels are much more "valuable for money" than Paris ones, even for almost the same price. I am sure Paris must be also "reasonable-money-spending-place" instead of just "great-historical-attractions-place".
The hostel has no kitchen to cook yourself, and has no free internet, only a machine that works by introducing coins! Rooms too small with a washbasin in it!!
staff in the morning is ok, but the 2 in the afternoon and evening sucks
Clean, good location but i don't understand why all the geasts of the building have to leave for clean betwin 10:30 till 14:30
people drinking alcohol, smoking marihuana, noices all around, first i was given a bed in the morning, then when i return back to sleep it was occupied, they gave me another bed with two women although they know they couldnt, or they offer me to sleep on the floor. Just disgusting. Everything is bad there, the bathroom, is an special location for a horror movie. More than very poor.
Basic things like light bulbs in the bathroom were left unchanged so that if the sun was not out, you had to use the toilet in the dark. The breakfast was terrible and the same each day. I would have rather paid a dew bucks less than have the price of breakfast included. The website misleadingly says that internet is provided, but it was not available for free. It also said towels were provided, but I had to make a fuss and ask three times to get one, and when i got it was moldy. I know this place is cheap, but there is no reason for such lousy food, or for cutting corners on light bulbs and soap. Cutting corners on that stuff doesn't save much money, and it makes guests frustrated.
Really great place to stay, we loved our room and the fact we were upgraded from a dorm to our own room for free. Breakfast was fine, location is good, easy to come and go. We found the internet difficult to use at times and a little over priced (but you can get free wifi if you go to the McCafe on the corner!). Also highly recommend getting a ten trip pass for the Metro- it saved us heaps.
The place is safe, is not in a very nice zone but is cheap, but I have the membership and they didn't gave the discount.
I have visited already about a dozen of hostels in Paris, I divide them into 4 categories: 1) top, to recommend; 2) middle: if the top ones are not available; 3) only in emergency, be prepared to all disappointments; 4) to be closed immediately because 3rd world standard, security zero, dirty, bad staff, etc.
The hostel in Jules Ferry avenue belongs to the second category: the location is o.k., but too small rooms, no lift, too less WC and shower.
The staff was o.k., and the place was clean. So it is to recommend if you cannot find any place in the hostels of category (1), which normally have the same price for a better offer.
