Staff were so unfriendly and abrupt, there is no need for that!

This is a good hostel and well run, but it's not good value for money. The minimum rate quoted is for a 6-bed dorm, of which there is only one, and the remaining 4-bed dorms cost $35 per head, compared with $30 per head for a similar dorm at San Francisco City Center hostel. The difference is that the Seattle hostel is run privately for profit and has a local HI monopoly. There are non-HI hostels in the city which may provide a better-value alternative and are worth checking out.

I think a bigger sign needs to be placed outside the hostel, as I (and loads of others) walked straight past the entrance when we first arrived!!

    Hostel response:
Sian, Thanks for pointing that out. Our current 2'x3' sign is only feet from our door. It says, "Hostel" with a black arrown pointing at the door. We are working on a bigger sign. Thanks again and travel safe.

1.The location of the hostel is not shown at the right point on the google map. 2. Since it is located on the busy street, it is a little noisy at night.

    Hostel response:
Zhu, I just reviewed the google map on our HI Website. Not sure which one your viewing. This map is accurate almost to the inch. It clearly locates us on S King Street between 5th and 6th avenue half way up the block on the north hand side. Most large cities do generate a general noise. Seattle is no exception. I hope we see you again.

Sticking door lock that didn't work properly all the time I was there. Keys often didn't work and staffs attitude when you inform them keys didn't work absolutely stank, they were so so rude

    Hostel response:
Nancy, Sorry you had a problem with the door and keys. I will review your comments with the staff! My apologies.

Boring hostel most older people staying there. No bar and you can't drink there, no pub brawl and weird people haning around outside the hostel.

    Hostel response:
Dan, Sorry you were disapointed. HI has a no alcohol policy we feel keeps things calmer with fewer problems. We do host pub crawls once per week and walking tours twice weekly. Travel safe.

Hostel Overview

Important Information: Please be aware that all pricing listed on this website is Hostelling International member pricing not including tax. If you are not a Hostelling International member, you will need to pay an additional $3 per night per person plus tax.

Hostelling International Seattle at the American Hotel offers a great value-oriented stay and a convenient location in the International District/Chinatown/Japantown of downtown Seattle just one block east of Union Station, which is a main Sound Transit Link Light Rail stop from Seattle-Tacoma (SeaTac) International Airport. We are also two blocks east of King Street Station, which is the Amtrak train station on the railroad lines to and from Portland (Oregon), Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada), and Spokane.

Almost every bus stops across the street from these train stations, which serve as a regional transit hub for Seattle and its neighborhoods, including but not limited to Belltown, Ballard, Capitol Hill (home to Seattle University and Seattle Central Community College), First Hill (home to the three major hospitals: Harborview Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center, and Virginia Mason Medical Center), Fremont, Georgetown, Queen Anne (home to Seattle Pacific University), South Lake Union, University District (known as the U-District and home to the University of Washington), and Wallingford. Buses also leave from this location to Bellevue, Everett (and Boeing), Kirkland, Olympia (the state capital), Redmond (home of Microsoft), Renton (and Boeing), and Tacoma (and its many museums).

Other amenities in our establishment include free WiFi access to the Internet, TV room, library, computer room, coin-operated washers & dryers, storage lockers, and 24-hour kitchen and dining area. Uwajimaya Asian Grocery Store is one block away so guests can bring their own food back to prepare or reheat at the American Hotel, or one may eat at the many inexpensive restaurants in the area, including a bakery, Taiwan Restaurant and sandwich shop in our very own building.

We are a safe, clean, affordable, and modern hostel with both private rooms and dorm room beds in a historic hotel building from 1926 that was renovated in 2009. We are a few blocks south of City Hall and a couple blocks east of Pioneer Square (home of the Underground Tour) and the Puget Sound waterfront piers with ferry service to the San Juan Islands, Vashon Island, and Victoria (British Columbia, Canada).

The sport stadiums – Safeco Field (home of the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball (MLB)) and Qwest Field (home of the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL) and Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer (MLS)) – are just a few blocks southwest of us and within easy walking distance.

Access to other public and tourist attractions such as the Seattle Center (via Monorail), Space Needle, Experience Music Project (EMP)/Science Fiction Museum, Key Arena (home of the Seattle Storm and many music concerts), Pike Place Market, and Seattle Public Library are a short walk or bus ride (which is free downtown during business hours).

We accommodate all types of travelers visiting Seattle, Washington State, and the Pacific Northwest. We are a great choice for those traveling alone or with a group as we can accommodate up to 294 people. Although historically known as “youth hostels”, we serve all ages from families with kids to high school students, college students, university students, those in the workforce, retirees, and senior citizens. We are accessible and comfortable for people of all ages and nationalities. Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions or to check availability.
