The hostel is a converted house in a residential part of Phoenix, with some bars and other amenities close by. The light rail and major buses are 9 blocks from the hostel, but other buses are closer. Phoenix is a huge, sprawling city but the hostel is centrally located for downtown, the main nightlife area of Tempe (10 miles but easily accessed on the light rail, and Scotsdale, 10 miles on 2 buses in the other direction The hostel has fun and very knowledgable people workling there adn provide all the facilities you might need

Sorry guys but the ungrouted tiles lying on top of the counter-top in the kitchen are a huge trap for debris and germs in what should be a clean and relatively germ free food prep area. Just lift one up and have a peek !Otherwise, a fabulous hostel.

I just stayed 2 nights at this hostel but I really enjoyed the kindness of the staff members and the other travelers. It felt a little bit like home. If I would need to come back in Phoenix I would go back to this place for sure !

We had a very nice stay at the metcalf house where the staff are delightfully helpful and always happy to talk. A lovely atmosphere surrounds the place also which only adds to the experience. However compared to other hosteling international sites the metcalfe house lacks certain perks that makes it a H.I. Though the social aspect at this hostel is very pleasant, when few tennants are around there is very little to do and the atmosphere somewhat dies. Like other H.I locations we felt his could be resolved with the inclusion I a television room or even a pool table, hey with the heat in Phoenix the inclusion if a swimming pool would surely attract more visitors. Costly and petty I know but with the lack of attractions in Phoenix thus could only be beneficial to the metcalfe house. Irrelevant to this we had a great stay and would like to reiterate what a wonderful job the staff are doing there.

Loved the staff and had great conversations with them and the other guests. Only a few issues. My mattress was so thin that I had trouble sleeping. Strong smell in room that wouldn't go away. One girl said she didn't want to say anything but said it was hard for her to sleep with it so near her bunk. The staff sprayed with Tea Tree but didn't really help. Only other thing is that for travelers who have never been to Phoenix we may not realize the layout of the city. Had no idea it has a central street with Avenues on one side and Streets on the other. The shuttle from the airport to the Light Rail was great but when I got out I thought I was walking toward the hostel till I got to 10th Avenue (hostel is on street address). It was a long trek with luggage on a hot day. I still have the blisters and couldn't wear most of my footwear the whole time. All in all, I was very happy and have even connected with a foreign traveler as email pals. Thank you Tulie and Geraldine!!
