    A really pleasant stay - this is a super traditional rural hostel yet only a stone's throw from DC. Thanks to the Manager, Mike who couldn't have been more helpful or welcoming.

Hostel Overview

Just two miles from Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, this cozy lodge stands high on a bluff, overlooking the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. The hostel is perfect for visitors to the Civil War Battlefields of Western Maryland. ( Antietam, Catoctin, Monocacy). Washington, DC, Baltimore , MD and Gettysburg, PA are only an hour away. You can hike the Appalachian Trail, bicycle the C&O Canal, float down the river on an inner tube, raft or canoe. Use our equipment to play Frisbee, Volleyball, or Badminton. Relax beside the fireplace with a good book from our extensive library, or build a campfire outside for 'S'mores'.

The Contemporary American Theatre Festival and live music clubs are in nearby Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Both Amtrak (daily) and the MARC (workdays-only) provide train service to and from Washington DC's Union Station.

HI-Harpers Ferry is a 34 bed hostel and campground located in the Appalachian Mountains of Western Maryland. We are located at mile post 59 of the C and O towpath where it overlaps with the Appalachian Trail. We sit overlooking the Potomac River surrounded by the sounds of nature. We are a short two mile walk up the C and O towpath to the Historic Harpers Ferry National Park.

Our hostel features 10, 12, and 6 bed dormitory accommodations as well as two Houston (double bed with single on top) private rooms able to sleep up to 3 people each. All rooms share communal bathrooms, one for males and one for females. The hostel has a full guest use kitchen, dining area, common area with a fireplace, and a free guest use computer with Internet. Free WiFi is available throughout the building. Coin Operated laundry is available. The hostel also has porches for relaxing in the sun. The campgrounds surrounding the building offer use of picnic tables, grills, the large firepit, and space for playing games such as Frisbee and volleyball.

Located along the C and O towpath and Appalachian Trail our hostel is the perfect location for short day hikes and bike rides in the area. In the summer months take a dip into the cool waters of the Potomac River, or take one of the many guided rafting tours or rent a tube and float down the river. The hostel is surrounded by Civil War history from the National Park of Historic Harpers Ferry, to John Browns house, to Antietam National Battlefield.

Hostel stays start at $18 per night for dorm rooms and $40 per night for private rooms. Taxes and fees are added upon check in. Your stay includes sheets, a towel, blankets, and a pillow. We also offer a free pancake breakfast and free coffee and tea is provided throughout the day.

Camping is available at $6 per person. You have access to a port o pot, potable water, a newly built camping pavilion, firepit, and grills. You can access the coin operated laundry inside. There is a $5 shower fee to use inside bathroom facilities. You do not have access to hostel space or the kitchen when camping.

Front desk hours are from 7am to 10am and 5pm to 10pm. From April 15th to May 26th and September 6th to October 15th the hostel will be closed between the hours of 10am and 5pm with check ins starting at 5pm. From May 27th to September 5th the hostel will be open 24 hours with check ins starting at 3pm. Check out is 10am.

For groups please contact the hostel for special group discounts. Entire hostel reservations are available off season for $250.00 a night, on season for $450.00 per night.

HI-Harpers Ferry is a membership based organization. You will be charged a $3 membership fee per day if not a card carrying member of Hostelling International. Local taxes (12%) are added upon check in. You must have a valid state issued ID or International passport to stay at the hostel.

Directions

Bus:The easiest way to get to the hostel is to take advantage of the Hostel Hiker Shuttle bus, leaving from Baltimore and Washington DC three days a week. To make a reservation see www.hostelhiker.com Take Greyhound to Frederick, MD. From there you can either get a taxi to the hostel or take the MARC train (Monday through Friday) to the Barnesville Station. From the Barnesville Station you need to change MARC trains and take it to the Brunswick or Harpers Ferry Hostel stations. There is a weekday shuttle bus that can pick you up a block from the Greyhound Station in Frederick, Maryland. For bus schedules, call 301-694-2065 on weekdays from 8 AM to 4 PM. The bus will take you to Knoxville, which is a two mile walk from the hostel. From the Knoxville bus stop, simply walk over to the river, turn right and walk along the C&O Path, leave the C&O Path at the bulletin board just after milepost 58, cross the tracks, take a sharp left on the road, walk a mile, turn left on Sandy Hook Road, and the hostel is the first house on the left.
Parking:Parking is free for hostel guests. Limited bus and camper parking is available. Parking is at a fee for day hikers. Driving Directions: To get here from Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, take Route 340 East/North for about 4 miles towards Maryland. This will take you across the Shenandoah River into Virginia and then across the Potomac River into Maryland. Turn right at the first Maryland exit, which is the "Keep Tryst Road/Valley Road" exit. Then take the next right onto Sandy Hook Road, and the hostel is the first house on the left. To get here from Frederick, Maryland take Route 340 West for about 17 miles. Turn left at the last Maryland exit, before crossing the Potomac River into Virginia. That will be the "Keep Tryst Road" exit. Take the next right onto Sandy Hook Road, and the hostel is the first house on the left. To get from Washington D.C. to Frederick take Route 270 North for 50 miles. To get from Baltimore to Frederick, take Route 70 West for 50 miles. To get from Harrisburg or Gettysburg to Frederick, take Route 15 South.

Rail:To travel by train, you can take AMTRAK (the Capitol Limited), or you can take the MARC Train (Brunswick Line), both of which run between Harpers Ferry and Union Station in WashingtonD.C. The MARC Train is very inexpensive (less than fifteen dollars round trip last time we checked), but it only runs on weekdays, with trains going toward D.C. early in the morning and leaving D.C. For schedules, call AMTRAK at 1-800-USA-RAIL or MARC at 1-800-325-RAIL. The hostel is a gorgeous two-mile walk along the Potomac River and Appalachian Trail (simply walk out of the Harpers Ferry Train Station and turn left until you get to the convergence of the two rivers and then proceed across the footbridge into Maryland). Alternatively you can call a taxi at 304-725-3794. The taxi from Harpers Ferry charges a flat rate of $35.
