Really enjoyed my stay, excellent location for a hostel really relaxed vibe and really comfortable. You meet lots of people and find out lots about the surrounding area.
only negative point was an elderly man collapsed in our dorm and he was in a bad state. Little weird, but didnt not effect our time at the hostel.
The bathrooms could have been cleaned more thoroughly. Also, I arrived very, very late and was placed in a random bed in the all male room (I am female). This caused quite a disturbance when the man whose bed I was in returned at 3am in the morning. The staff had written the wrong room number, bed number and door code on my slip of paper. They must pay better attention.
too many beds in dorms (14) ! — not enough big lockers for backpack — awful lighting in dorms, too strong kept tuned on and off during evening et worse : night time
A great hostel. Lots of friendly people and staff. Free pancakes in the mornings were pretty good too (coffee not so much!) Bathrooms a little run-down and old-fashioned but perfectly acceptable and clean. Could do with a new stock of free towels for rent though!!
Love the free breakfast and the pancakes were always good. Great location and easy to find.
There were a lot of drugs & alcohol being used in the Hostel, and the staff turned a blind eye to it. As a result, during my stay one young lady passed out and fell outside on the patio and the paramedics were called to take her to hospital. There was also a guest who many female residents felt was harassing them by constantly flirting with all the female guests.
Very friendly, I appreciated being able to buy travel toothpaste for cheap, use free towels, and "rent" a hall locker with just a returnable deposit. Some hostels would try to profit on all of these things.
The showers could have been cleaner and the location could have been better. It's quite a hike from the downtown. There are buses which are the better plan, however even then it is a 10 minute walk to the closest stop.
Never got any sleep because people were banging stuff and slamming doors all night, going in and out of the room, and the guy who was on night duty doing his cleaning thing! Couldn't breath in the woman's dorm - no air in there. Bathroom was disgustingly moldy and dirty and covered with hair, etc. The smell of the mold in the bathroom was making me sick! Running the fan in the bathroom gave me a migraine. Kitchen was gross too...yuk...especially the packed refrigerators and crusty counter tops. OH I almost forgot the incredibly filthy laundry room and ancient, rusted, encrusted falling apart washers and dryers. I think my clothes came out dirtier than they went in but at only 1.00 per load, what a bargain!
I enjoyed my stay at HI Austin, excellent location and friendly staff.
nice pier and lawn out back, great for early morning yoga or just reading a book under a big shady tree. :)
