The views from Buccaneers are ingredible! There a loads of great activities. The Xhosa dinner is a must.
Hostel Overview
Buccaneers is definitely one of the best backpackers in South Africa thanks to the hard work and incredible generosity and spirit of the Price family.Set on a hillside in the wild coastal forest, Buccaneers has exceptional sea and lagoon views and a stunning unspoiled beach right on its doorstep.
An inspiring creative energy flows through the place with brave strokes of creative genius apparent everywhere. Their secluded, rustic beach cottages, each housing 2-3 doubles, offer excellent value for money.
Trail through coastal forests to a wonderful shell beach or take a 15km stroll along unspoiled coastline. Get into a game of volleyball, try the climbing wall and swimming pool or the Long-table pub that provides the perfect setting for legendary revelries and gob-smacking nosh.
Sound too good to be true? It almost is. So don't miss it.
Buccaneers has been described as being like a backpackers village because of the way it's spread out over the 8 hectare of wild coastal forest right next to the stunning Chintsa beach. Most people say that it's a place to come home to. A legend in its own time. For us it is home and for the past 12 years we have been sharing it with people just like you - travelers from all over the world.
We like to think that at this stage we know what you want. These are some of the things we have learnt: Travelers come in all shapes and ages. They tend to fall into (or between) these categories:
* Cool cats * Cocooning couples * The jolly festives * The quiet contemplatives
So we offer choices.......
There's a lovely lively bar which has certainly seen some great revelry in its time. Our stunning tropical pool is a buzzy spot in the summer months when a gorgeous poolside cafe offers decidedly decadent refreshments (including divine pizzas!). And every day we have some sort of free activity so you can chill and meet the rest of the gang.
And for you, the quieter ones, Buccaneers is a haven of tranquility and natural delights - quiet beach walks or canoe trips up the Chintsa River and a secret bird hide on our own dam.
We've created a wide range of accommodation and activities to suit these different needs.
We are always being asked why, with one of the best coastal settings in South Africa, we haven't moved into the sophisticated 5 star league. Quite simply - we love what we do. We prefer the whole laid back friendly style, the fact that only first names count and the sense that we're all kindred spirits. We love our type of travelers - friendly, curious about every aspect of our beautiful country, tolerant of some of the shortcomings of the rural scene (power failures!) and so enthusiastic and well informed about life in general.

Coming from Mthatha: 40km from Kei River Bridge take Chintsa t/o 12kms to Chintsa west/Buccaneers t/o (do not take Chintsa east t/o) Coming from East London: Follow signs N2 Mthatha take exit 1060 off N2. Cross over freeway. Go 1km to Chintsa t/o. Follow 16kms to Chintsa west/Buccaneers t/o. BAZBUS will leave you just outside our door almost every day. |
