We arrived at this hostel soaking wet through to the skin & were offered absolutely no drying facilities. The hostel was at the end of a one mile cart track that was almost un-passable. We asked the hostelier if he could provide breakfast like we had done in the previous days hostel stays in Scotland & he bluntly said no. We also asked (as we were cold & hungry) if we could get a coffee & he replied "only if we had brought our own". This was not the reception we needed after a full day of travelling on bikes that included crossing the snowbound cairngorms. We were thoroughly annoyed with this man & the state of the hostel. there is nothing on the website to show this is a bad place to get to or one that offers no services. We had to stay in a B&B at a higher cost & also have loat any deposit we paid on this hostel. It would be nice if you could refund our deposit for this stay but I won't hold my breath.

The friendly host made us a warm open fire, after having no time for us at our reception. (We arrived a few minutes before 5 p.m.)

SYHA’s first ever hostel is a charming cosy cottage set in the historic Scottish Borders. Situated near to the superb 7 Stanes Glentress and Innerleithen mountain bike trails, and close to the ruins of Newark Castle and Yarrow Kirk, the hostel is well placed. There's good fishing and pony trekking locally as well as the Southern Upland Way for keen walkers.
