The hostel was very cold and there were no cooking facilities as it was low season. We were woken at 6am by a group of noisy 10-year -olds.
the building is beautiful and it is probably a good place to stay in the summer, but not in march.
As it rains often and heavily on the Azores it would be great to have a drying facility for shoes at the hostel.
Though it is possible to get your garments dry in a tumble dryer but they would be available as a rule shortly before the noon next day - this time one would like to be already on the next trip having ones stuff dry on.
I do not have any commentary to your hostel. I have been very, very happy there up to the point that it has not been very pleasant for me to move on. I like your hostel, your very friendly staff, your island and now (I am in a hostel in San Jorge after Terceira) I can say that I love the Azor Islands. It is a beautiful place. Take care of that. And try to avoid mass or if you want package tourism. It is always detrimental to any place in the world. I have been travelling on all continents quite a lot so that I do know what I am talking about.
All right. Take care. See you next Friday.
Well located as a base for exploring the island, close to gardens, grocery stores, and downtown. The only trick if you have rented a car is to figure the route out to the main highway. Otherwise you can end up in a maze of small streets with no clear way of exiting.
I wish reception had mentioned that I could order extra things for breakfast as I only read the notice on the last morning.
This place felt very well run, staff friendly and helpful, building was older but at least it was clean. No wifi, but the Solmar Mall which is a 15 min walk away has free wifi. There is a computer for use for free in the hostel. Breakfast was standard, I liked how you could buy additional food (I purchased scrambled eggs for 1 euro). Overall a good stay, just wish the weather was better when I was there!
I may be biased, but I was mugged outside the hostel area. Which is why I rated the location as poor.
Hostel response:
HI,
Muggings and robberies are a rare sight in the Azores, unfortunately there are a few. You were extremely unlucky, the main police station is just up the street from the Hostel, so this area is pretty secure.
I hope this incident doesn't make you think less of the Azores and the azorean people.
Best regards
The door lock to our dorm was really hard to use and frustrating. There was only one key to share with others and it caused some annoyance with others keeping the key etc...
The showers glass screens were see-through and the bathrooms were grubby, and ran out of handsoap and toilet paper....
We moved out after 1 night.
There is a really nice park nearby and a big shopping mall with a supermarket.
As far as the ambience goes, there didn't seem to be much of one. People seemed to get up early and head out to explore the island. I didn't really see many other people staying at the hostel.
Some things that could be improved:
-There is no wi-fi connection. They do have a computer, but it's about 3 euros for one hour. Wi-fi is pretty standard in most hostels in mainland Portugal.
-The staff is generally very nice, but I think they could do more to facilitate activities among the guests. I suggested putting up a sign up sheet for people interested in renting a car to see the island (it's quite expensive to do by yourself). Some of the staff were shocked by this idea and basically told me that they weren't used to doing that kind of thing...shortage of rental cars + young people on a budget = sharing a car makes sense.
well, the breakfeast....
