The Whitby Museum is very eclectic. Great fossil and ship section, but lots of other quirky stuff including a passenger pigeon. What you get being a port city in an empire.

Up the coast for 10 miles to Straithes, a very lovely old town. Can't drive down into the town and a steepish walk, but so worth it.
